The 2nd generation Ford Expedition was available since 2003. Engines offered on the previous generation were carried over, but not without major changes and improvements. In 2005 the base 4.6L engine was dropped as the 5.4L engine was made standard on all Ford Expeditions and updated with 24-valve technology and variable valve timing. The new 4-speed 4R75E automatic featured fully electronic Smart Shift technology.
