The 1st generation Ford Windstar was available since 1994 in a 4-door minivan body style (two trim levels were available: base GL trim and high-end LX trim, as well as a cargo version called Cargo Van). The Ford Windstar Limited model was available since 1998. The standard engine was the 3.8L (3,797 cc) indirect injection Essex V6 making 200 hp (149 kW) at 5000 rpm and 230 lb·ft (312 N·m) at 3000 rpm. In 1996 the 3.8L engine was replaced with the 3.0L (2,986 cc) Vulcan V6 making 146 hp (109 kW) at 5000 rpm and 164 lb·ft (222 N·m) at 3500 rpm on base LX models, while the larger 3.8L engine horsepower was increased to 200. In 1997, the Ford Windstar received heavy cosmetic changes.

The 2nd generation Ford Windstar was available since 1992 in 4/5-door minivan body styles (five trim levels were available: base 1999-2000, LX, SE, SEL and Cargo Van). In 2000 the Limited model returned as the most luxurious model. In 2001 LX became the base model, and a new SE Sport model joined the lineup. The 3.0L Vulcan and 3.8L Essex engines were carried over from the 1st generation.
