The 1st generation Acura CL was available since 1997 in a 2-door coupe body style. Two petrol engines were available: 2.2L Honda F22B1 I4 produced 145 hp (108 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 147 lb·ft (199 N·m) at 4,500 rpm, 3.0L Honda J30A1 V6 produced 200 hp (149 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 195 lb·ft (264 N·m) at 4,700 rpm. In 1998, the new petrol engine was added: 2.3L Honda F23A1 I4 produced 150 hp (112 kW) at 5,700 rpm and 152 lb·ft (206 N·m) at 4,800 rpm. The standard transmission was a 4-speed automatic while a 5-speed manual transmission was an option for 4-cylinder engines.
The 2nd generation Acura CL was available since 2001 (two trim levels were available: Base and Type-S). One petrol engines was available: 3.2L Honda J32A1 SOHC VTEC V6 produced 225 hp (168 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 217 lb·ft (294 N·m) at 4,700 rpm [Base] or 260 hp (194 kW) at 6,100 rpm and 232 lb·ft (315 N·m) at 3,500 rpm [Type-S] with a 5-speed automatic gearbox. In 2003, the Acura CL was facelifted (cosmetic changes only).
