The 1st generation Chevrolet Alero was introduced in 1999 in 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe body styles (three trim levels were available: the most basic trim level GX, the midrange trim level GL and the luxury trim level GLS). Two petrol engines were available: 2.4 L LD9 Twin Cam I4 produced 150 hp (112 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 155 lb·ft (210 N·m) at 2,400-4,400 rpm, 3.4 L LA1 V6 produced 170 hp (130 kW) at 4,700 rpm and 200 lb·ft (270 N·m) at 4,000 rpm. In 2002, the 2.4L LD9 engine was replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec L61 I4 produced 140 hp (100 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 150 lb·ft (203 N·m) at 4000 rpm.
