The 3rd generation Chevrolet Caprice was introduced in 1977 in 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan or station wagon body styles. In 1980 the 4.1 L Chevrolet Straight-6 110 hp (82 kW) was replaced by a new 3.8L Chevrolet V6 110-115 hp (82-86 kW) 170-190 lbft (230-258 Nm) as the base engine for sedans and coupes. The 4.4 L 267 200 hp (149 kW) 245 lbft (332 Nm) was the standard engine for station wagons. The 4th generation Chevrolet Caprice was introduced in 1991 in 4-door sedan or station wagon body styles. The standard engine in all sedans was the 4.3 L L99 V6 200 hp (150 kW) 245 lbft (332 Nm) engine with the 4-speed 4L60-E automatic transmission, the 4L60 transmission was optional. The 5.7 L LT1 V8 260 hp (194 kW) 330 lbft (447 Nm) engine was standard for station wagons.
The 5th generation Chevrolet Caprice (also called Holden Caprice) was introduced in 1999. The standard Caprice was powered by the 6.0 L V8 350 hp (260 kW) 381 lbft (517 Nm) engine with the 6-speed GM 6L80-E automatic transmission, the 3.6 L V6 261 hp (195 kW) 250 lbft (340 Nm) engine with the 5-speed GM 5L40E automatic transmission was optional.
