Ford Puma was introduced in 1997 in a 3-door coupe body style. The standard engine was 1.4L (1,388 cc) Ford Zetec-SE 16V making 90 hp (67 kW) at 5500 rpm and 92 lb·ft (125 N·m) at 4000 rpm while the 1.7L (1,679 cc) Ford Zetec-SE 16V VCT making 123 hp (92 kW) at 6300 rpm and 116 lb·ft (157 N·m) at 4500 rpm was an option (1998-2000). Since 2000 the standard engine was 1.6L (1,596 cc) Ford Zetec-SE 16V making 103 hp (76 kW) at 6000 rpm and 107 lb·ft (145 N·m) at 4000 rpm. All vehicles were equipped with a five-speed Getrag Ford IB5 manual transmission. In United Kingdom were available three special edition variants of Ford Puma: Millennium (1999-2000), Black (2000-2001) and Thunder (2000-2002).
