The 1st generation of Ford Tempo was introduced in 1984 in 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan body styles. Five trim levels were available: L, GL, AWD, LX and GLX. Two petrol and one diesel engines were available: 2.3 L Ford HSC produced 90-100 hp (67-75 kW) and 125 lb·ft (169 N·m) of torque, 2.3 L HSO produced 84 hp (63 kW) and 118 lb·ft (165 N·m) of torque, 2.0 L Mazda RF produced 52 hp (39 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 82 lb·ft (111 N·m) at 2,750 rpm of torque.
The 2nd generation of Ford Tempo was introduced in 1988 in the same body style. Five trim levels were available: L, GL, AWD, LX and GLS. The 2.0L diesel engine was dropped and a new petrol 3.0 L Vulcan V6 145 hp (108 kW) and 170 lb·ft (208 N·m) engine was added.
