The Jeep Comanche was available since 1985 in 2-door truck body style and in two cargo bed lengths: 6-feet (1.83 metres) and 7-feet (2.13 metres). In 1985 the compact pickup truck was available in three trims (the basic-trim Custom, X- One, and XLS- A). From 1987 seven trims were added: base SporTruck, Olympic Edition, Chief, Laredo, Pioneer and Eliminator. The 1985 Jeep Comanches could be equipped with one of three engines: the AMC 150 2.5 L I4 130 hp (97 kW) and 149 lbft (202 Nm), the General Motors LR2 2.8 L V6 115 hp (86 kW) and 150 lbft (203 Nm), or the Renault 2.1 L I4 turbo diesel 91 hp (68 kW). In 1987, the 2.8 L V6 was replaced by the new fuel-injected 4.0 L 242 CID AMC 242 inline-six that delivered 173 hp (129 kW). In 1991 the 4.0 L, 242 CID, I-6 engine gained 17 hp to 190 hp (142 kW), while the AMC 150 2.5 L I4 engine jumped from 117 hp (87 kW) to 130 hp (97 kW). From 1985 to 1992 six different transmissions were offered: the AX-4 (4-speed), AX-5, AX-15 (5-speed overdrive) and the Peugeot BA-10/5 (5-speed) manual transmissions; the Chrysler A904 (3-speed) and the Aisin AW-4 (4-speed) automatic transmissions.
