The 1st generation Jeep Liberty was introduced in 2002 in 4-door sport utility vehicle body style (three trim levels were available: the base-trim Sport, Renegade and Limited). It was the first Jeep vehicle to use the two then-new PowerTech engines: 2.4L straight-4 produced 150 hp (110 kW), which was discontinued in 2006, and 3.7L V6 produced 210 hp (160 kW). The vehicle was available with either a part-time Command-Trac or full-time Selec-Trac transfer case. In 2005, all Jeep Liberty received a minor facelift. The standard diesel engine was 2.8L VM Motori R 428 I4 produced 160 hp (120 kW) and 295 lbft (400 Nm) of torque.
The 2nd generation Jeep Liberty was introduced in 2008 in 4-door sport utility vehicle body style in two basic trim levels: Sport and Limited. The standard engine was 3.7L PowerTech V6 produced 210 hp (160 kW) with 6-speed Chrysler NSG370 manual transmission. The standard diesel engine was 2.8L VM Motori RA 428 I4 produced 197 hp (147 kW). The 2009 Jeep Liberty was relatively unchanged from the 2008 models with the exception of stiffer rear axle shafts and retuned springs, shocks, anti-roll bars, steering gear valve, low rollback brake calipers and a revised brake pedal ratio. The six-speed manual transmission was dropped, and the 4-speed Ultradrive 42RLE automatic was now standard (additional option: 5-speed Mercedes-Benz W5A580 automatic transmission).
