The 1st generation Jeep Wrangler (YJ) was introduced in 1986 in 2-door convertible and 2-door SUV body styles (six trim levels were available: Base, Laredo, Sport, Sahara, Renegade and Rio Grande). The Jeep Wrangler used a 2.5L AMC 150 Inline-4 or optional 4.2L AMC 258 CID straight-6 until 1991. That year, a fuel-injected 4.0L AMC 242 variant replaced the 4.2L 258. The NP207 transfer case was used only for 1987 and replaced by the NP231.
The 2nd generation Jeep Wrangler (TJ) was introduced in 1996 in 2-door convertible and 2-door SUV body styles (fifteen trim levels were available: SE, X, Sport, Sahara, 60th Anniversary Edition, 65th Anniversary Edition, Apex, Columbia, Freedom, Golden Eagle, Rocky Mountain, Sahara Edition Unlimited Rubicon, Tomb Raider, Willys Edition & Rubicon). The engine was the same 4.0L AMC 242 Straight-6. A 2.5L AMC 150 Inline-4 engine was available on entry-level models until 2002 when the 2.4L PowerTech DOHC 4-cylinder engine replaced it.
The 3rd generation Jeep Wrangler (JK) was introduced in 2007 in 2/4-door convertible and 2/4-door SUV body styles. The standard Jeep Wrangler was available in six trim levels, including 2 special editions (the unlimited was available in four trim levels, including 1 special edition).
