Four petrol engines and one diesel engine were available: 1.1 L I3 12-valve produced 63-74 hp (47-55 kW) at 5,500-6,000 rpm and 68-74 lb·ft (92-100 N·m) at 2,500-3,500 rpm, 1.3 L I4 16-valve produced 94 hp (70 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 92 lb·ft (125 N·m) at 4,000 rpm, 1.5 L I4 16-valve produced 108 hp (80 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 107 lb·ft (145 N·m) at 4,000 rpm, 1.5 L Mitsubishi 4G15 I4 produced 175 hp (130 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 170 lb·ft (230 N·m) at 3,500 rpm [Brabus], 1.5 L I3 Cdi produced 67-94 hp (50-70 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 118-155 lb·ft (160-210 N·m) at 1,600-1,800 rpm.
The 2nd generation Smart Forfour was available since 2014 in the same body style. Two petrol engines were available: 0.9 L H-Type I3 TCe produced 89 hp (66 kW) and 100 lb·ft (135 N·m) at 2,500 rpm, 107 hp (79 kW) and 129 lb·ft (175 N·m) at 2,500 rpm, 1.0 L H-type I3 produced 59-70 hp (44-52 kW) and 67 lb·ft (91 N·m) at 2,850 rpm.
