The 1st generation Toyota Matrix was available since 2002 in a 5-door hatchback body style (three trim levels were available: Standard, XR, and XRS). Two petrol engines were available: 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE I4 produced 123-130 hp (92-97 kW) at 5,600-6,400 rpm and 122-129 ft·lb (165-171 N·m) at 4,200-4,400 rpm, 1.8 L 2ZZ-GE I4 produced 164-180 hp (122-134 kW) at 7,600 rpm and 133 lb·ft (180 N·m) at 6,800 rpm.
The 2nd generation Toyota Matrix was available since 2009 in the same body style (three trim levels were available: Standard [base], S, and XRS). Two petrol engines were available: 1.8 L 2ZR-FE I4 produced 132 hp (98 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb·ft (174 N·m) at 4,400 rpm, 2.4 L 2AZ-FE I4 produced 158 hp (118 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 162 lb·ft (220 N·m) at 4,000 rpm.
